We are pleased to announce the publication of ITRS Hike&Run, the expansion of the International Trail Rating System (ITRS) to include foot-based activities.
Since its inception for mountain biking, the ITRS has focused on a core objective: providing trail users and managers with a consistent, logic-based language to communicate trail challenges.
Why a foot based version?
Trails are inherently multi-use. While the environmental context (Wilderness) and risk (Exposure) remain constant, the technical and endurance demands change when wheels are replaced by feet.
ITRS Hike&Run applies the established four-pillar logic of the ITRS to the specific biomechanics of hiking and trail running.
A special addition to this version is an interpretation of technical levels for trail runners, helping users understand how terrain complexity impacts ‘runnability’.
Digital Co-Existence: One trail, two lenses
A key strength of this expansion is what we call “digital co-existence.” Because both systems utilise the same objective trail data (such as gradient and surface stability) trail managers can now generate two distinct ratings from a single dataset. It is the same trail, interpreted through two different lenses: the mechanics of the wheel and the biomechanics of the foot.
A foundation for dialogue
We see this release as an open impulse for the global trail community. Our goal is not to replace existing traditions, but to provide a modern, integrated tool that works across disciplines.
We look forward to entering a constructive dialogue with international trail associations, land managers, and stakeholders to further refine these standards. Our shared objective remains the same: clearer communication for safer and more enjoyable trail experiences.
